Twitch Platform Ingest Rules

Twitch officially recommends Constant Bitrate (CBR) only. Variable Bitrate (VBR) causes buffering and broadcast starvation during high-motion action spikes.

Official Doc↗Verified: 2026-11-04

Soft guideline recommendation is 6,000 kbps for standard 1080p60 broadcasts to ensure broad viewer accessibility without requiring cloud transcoding.

Ingest servers accept up to 8,000 kbps video with an approximate 8,500 kbps aggregate ceiling (video + audio). Streams exceeding 8,500 kbps risk dropped frames, transcoder rejection, or server disconnects.

Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting (OBS 30.2+) enables multiple client-side encodes, automatic stream configuration (varying 1.5–10.5 Mbps aggregate bandwidth), and 2K (1440p) streaming for Affiliates and Partners.

Keyframe interval must be set to 2 seconds strictly (not Auto).

For DMCA-safe music streaming, OBS Studio natively defaults to Track 2 for the Twitch VOD Track (streamers reserving Tracks 2–5 for discrete recording stems frequently select Track 6). Route live audio to Track 1, and uncheck your designated VOD track on your isolated music source (captured via Application Audio Capture, not Desktop Audio).

🎯 The 900p FPS Streamer Secret

Standard 1080p consists of $1920 \times 1080 = 2,073,600$ pixels per frame. At 60 fps, your encoder must process 124.4 million pixels every second. Constrained by Twitch's 6,000 kbps limit, this yields a low Bits Per Pixel score of 0.048 BPP, causing grass, tree leaves, and camera pans in Battle Royales to blur into blocks.

Scaling down to 1600 × 900 reduces pixels by 30.5% (to 86.4M pixels/sec). At that same 6,000 kbps bitrate, your BPP jumps to 0.069 BPP — a massive 43% boost in data per pixel. For fast games (Apex, Warzone, Valorant), 900p looks visually sharper to viewers than 1080p.

🎧 Twitch VOD Audio Track (DMCA Protection Setup)

Twitch supports separate audio routing for live broadcasts vs archived VODs. By isolating your music from the designated VOD track, you can listen to Spotify or copyright-protected music on stream without having your VODs muted or receiving DMCA copyright strikes:

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings > Output (set Output Mode to Advanced).
  2. Under the Streaming tab, check "Twitch VOD Track" and select your track. OBS natively defaults to Track 2, though streamers who record multi-track game/mic audio locally often select Track 6.
  3. Crucial Step: Add your music via Application Audio Capture (e.g. Spotify) rather than default "Desktop Audio", so its volume and routing are completely isolated.
  4. In the OBS Audio Mixer dock, click the gear icon > Advanced Audio Properties.
  5. Ensure Track 1 is checked for all audio sources (Live broadcast mix).
  6. On your isolated Music source, uncheck your designated VOD track (Track 2 or 6). Your live audience hears music, while Twitch VOD servers record the clean VOD track with zero music.

Mastering OBS Studio NVENC Settings for Twitch

Detailed breakdown of NVIDIA NVENC hardware encoder parameters:

Encoder Presets (P1 – P7)

NVIDIA's modern NVENC encoder replaces legacy presets with P1 (Fastest) through P7 (Slowest/Highest Quality). For live streaming on Twitch, P5 (Slow / Good Quality) or P6 (Slower / Better Quality) is the sweet spot. P7 offers negligible quality gain while spiking GPU encoder memory usage.

Tuning: High Quality vs Low Latency

Always select High Quality. The "Low Latency" tuning option is meant for interactive remote desktop streaming (Parsec/Moonlight) and sacrifices compression efficiency. It does not reduce stream delay on Twitch (low latency is managed in the Twitch Creator Dashboard).

Psycho Visual Tuning & Lookahead

Psycho Visual Tuning: ON (optimizes rate distortion across high-contrast edges).
Lookahead: OFF unless you have spare GPU headroom. Lookahead uses GPU CUDA cores to predict motion across frames, which can induce rendering lag in GPU-intensive games.

Internet Upload Speed vs. Safe Twitch Streaming Targets

ISP Upload Speed Safe Stream Bitrate Recommended Resolution & FPS Remaining Headroom for Gaming
5 Mbps 3,000 kbps 720p at 30 fps 40% (~2.0 Mbps buffer)
10 Mbps 5,500 kbps 900p at 60 fps or 720p at 60 fps 45% (~4.5 Mbps buffer)
20 Mbps 7,500 kbps 1080p at 60 fps (Affiliate/Partner) 62% (~12.5 Mbps buffer)
50+ Mbps (Fiber) 8,000 – 10,000 kbps 1080p60 / 1440p60 Enhanced 80%+ (Flawless zero drop)
